Turfagon Privacy Policy
Turfagon is a game you play by driving around your real city. This page explains what the game does with your information. The short version: your location is used to play the game on your phone, your progress stays on your phone, and I don't sell or share anything.
Your location
Turfagon uses your device's GPS to see which parts of the map you drive through, so it can count your turf, your miles, and your passes. If you turn on background driving in the phone app, Turfagon keeps doing this while you use other apps; on Android a notification shows the whole time it's running. The web version only uses your location while Turfagon is open on screen. Closing Turfagon stops it.
Your location is processed on your device. Turfagon does not send your location to me or to anyone else, does not keep a history of where you've been on any server, and does not use it for ads.
Your game progress
Your Family, turf, cash, messages, and settings are saved on your device, with an online backup (see "Online saves" below). Want your online backup deleted? Email me your key or save code and I'll remove it.
Accounts (optional)
On the website you can sign in with Google. You don't have to: the game works the same without it. If you do, Google tells my server your name, your email address and a Google account ID, and nothing else (I never see your Google password). I keep those with your account so your key and your online save can follow you to any device you sign in on.
If you're signed in and tap the Kickstarter button, your name and email go on a short list so I can match you to your pledge and send your key to your account.
You can sign out any time in Settings, and "Delete my account" in Settings removes your account and its sign-ins from my server. Your game keeps playing on that device either way.
What leaves your device
- Map pictures. To draw the map, your device downloads map images for the area on screen from a map provider (Apple Maps on iPhone, Google Maps on Android, and OpenStreetMap in the web version). Like any map app, the provider can see which map area was requested. Their own privacy policies apply.
- Game updates. The app checks Expo (my update service) for new versions of the game. This sends basic technical details such as the app version and platform, not your location or game progress.
- Feedback and texting the dev. If you send feedback (or text "BubbaLove (the dev)" in the game's phone), your message goes to my own server so I can read it and write back, along with where you sent it from, demo or full game, web / itch.io / phone, your rank and the game version, and the game's random install ID so my reply can reach you. The game checks for my replies while it's open. Your email is included only if you choose to type one.
- Anonymous play stats. So I know how many people play and what to improve, the game sends my own stats server (on Cloudflare) a few small, anonymous notes: that a play session started, how long you played (counted in 2-minute steps while the game is on screen), whether it's the demo or the full game, whether you play on the web, itch.io or the phone app, the website that sent you to Turfagon (or a link tag like ?from=tiktok), the rank you've reached, and when you tap the Kickstarter button. Each install is a random ID the game makes up. Along with these notes the game sends the Don and Family names you picked in the game (and your key, if you have one), so I can see who's playing. Those names are only shown to me, never to other players. Your real name and email are never sent this way. Cloudflare tells me the country the connection came from. I never send or store your GPS or any precise location, your IP address, your name, or anything you type in the game. I don't share these stats with anyone.
- Online saves. Your game (your Family, turf, cash and progress) is backed up to my own server every few minutes while you play, so it isn't lost and can follow you to another device. It's stored under your key, or under a random save code your game makes. It doesn't include your name, your email or any location history (if you sign in, it is linked to your account).
- Keys. If you enter a key for the full game, the key and a random ID for your browser are checked against my key server, so each key works only on the devices it belongs to (up to two). If you are signed in, your key is linked to your account.
Notifications
If you turn on notifications, reminders (like "cash is waiting on your turf") are scheduled on your device. They are not sent from a server.
What I don't do
- No ads, no ad tracking, and no third-party analytics (only the anonymous play stats above, on my own server).
- No selling or sharing of your information.
- No contacts, photos, microphone, or camera access.
Age rating
Turfagon is a crime-themed game for mature players (17+). It is not directed at children, and I do not knowingly collect information from children.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new date.
